Who We Are: Wave of Compassion is a dynamic event benefitting Surf Aid International, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Surf Aid International is charging forward to promote health and social programs throughout the Mentawai Islands. The ultimate goal for Wave of Compassion is to raise funds to implement Surf Aid's new five year malaria control project. The project will be subject to strict monitoring and yearly evaluation. Wave of Compassion has been made possible through a combination of passion, talents, typical surfing friendships and a desire to give back. The event is the brainchild of Anthony Marcotti, a fifth grade teacher and co-founder of Saraina Koat Mentawai who together with Steve Barilotti, Jordan and Aii Heuer, Un, Gary Sirota, Justin Wallace, Andrew Griffiths, and the team at Surfer Magazine developed this unique idea as a fundraising initiative to support the people of the Mentawai Islands.

Anthony, Steve, Jordan, Aii, Un, Gary, Justin, Andrew and the team at Surfer Magazine, all stakeholders in the Mentawai, have been inspired to want to support Surf Aid's initiatives in the Mentawai Islands and have over many months donated their time, talent, money, ad space and energy to make this event possible.

The vision for Surf-Aid International was born when Dr. Dave Jenkins travelled to the Mentawai Islands to surf and rest from his job as director of a corporate health project in Singapore. When Dave experienced the disparity between his pleasure playing in the waves, his luxury charter yacht, and the sick and dying children only meters away in nearby villages he decided something had to be done to help these friendly people.

Surf Aid International was registered in New Zealand as a non-profit organization in January of 2000, and Surf Aid International, USA was approved as a US nonprofit under I.R.S. §501(c)(3) in December 2002. Surf-Aid International's initial mission is "to improve the health of the Mentawai people, and to encourage and coordinate support of the global surfing community."

Saraina Koat Mentawai literally means "Mentawai Wave Family". We are the only surf charter company registered in the Mentawai Islands as an official Mentawai business. In addition to being a surf charter organization, "SKM" is a boat agency, facilitator of land agreements and a domestic travel agent.

Saraina Koat Mentawai was founded in Indonesia by Un, Jordan Heuer, and Aii Heuer. Anthony Marcotti maintains Saraina Koat Mentawai's base of operations in the United States.

Saraina Koat Mentawai is dedicated to supporting the local Mentawai economy by employing Mentawai residents and guides in our surf charter business and our cultural tours. Our crews are experienced locals dedicated to protecting the well being and natural environment of the Mentawai Islands.

Legend writer, all round global travelling couch rider, Steve Barilotti is one of the pre-eminent surfing writers. After the great man spent far too many nights swatting at mossies and witnessing first hand the suffering of the Mentawai people he jumped at the opportunity to work with Anthony and his friends at Surfer to develop this grass- roots old school surfing trip of a life time.
