Words cannot adequately describe this young man's spirit and passion for all things natural and pure. Surfing is surely part of his soul, but his love of the pursuit is only a fragment of an incredibly deep and sincere character that reveals new levels and grasps for insight as restless as the fluttering of an open book in a gentle breeze. It is often hard to tell what page he is on, his vocal and behavioral pearls often the caliber of comments you'd expect from someone twice or more his age. Both Rasta's character and behaviour consistently typifying the peace and contentment he intrinsically pursues as habit. As a young surfer he seemed destined for the glare and fame of the pro contest surfing world, along side his close friend and Billabong team mate Joel Parkinson, but their on-road paths parted several years back when Rasta's naturally searching spirit failed to be fulfilled by the global merry-go-round of the contest machine.
He was blessed to be offered the free-surfing path by Billabong, and has relished the adventure ever since, unrestricted in his spiritual endeavours. Before attaining success as an emerging junior talent, Rasta was a champion board paddler and ironman as a nipper, an insistence of his father Dennis who is as unique an individual as the son he so loves and is proud off. Dennis is a former SAS operative, fit as a malee bull, always looking for the discipline he applies to his own existence. He is the ultimate handyman, achiever and self-made individual, and he has handed many of his qualities and traits down to Dave who now lives at Ocean Shores, just north of Byron Bay, in a house that he has personally developed and extended with trades of his father's tutelage. With a passion for alternate board design, as well as a full rail exponent, he is particularly fond of single fins. Besides personal solace, Rasta's favourite habitat is in the barrel, an art in which he is well accomplished. He is a very unique individual with surely just as unique a life ahead of him.

Blue Horizon is Jack McCoy's most ambitious project to date and follows the incredible journey of two of the world's best surfers; current two-times world champion Andy Irons of Hawaii and Australian ‘soul surfer' Dave ‘Rasta' Rastovich. The film documents their unique and contrasting lifestyles, taking viewers to exotic locations and exciting new surf territories around the world.
The film also captures the behind the scene's action in the world title race between Irons and six times world champion Kelly Slater (Florida, USA) in the deciding Hawaiian events at the end of the 2003 season.
Blue Horizon has breathtaking images, monster waves and amusing anecdotes. Created especially for cinema release it will not be available on DVD or video until the completion of the 2004 Festival.
Global surf wear company Billabong is supporting the Festival. “Billabong has a long association with Jack, going back decades but the excitement level on this project surpasses all others and there has been quite a few over the years,” said Billabong's Brand Manager Andrew Flitton. “Jack has a true appreciation of surfing and we know Blue Horizon will be another classic.”
